Traffic congestion is a familiar challenge in India’s metro cities, with even smaller urban centers experiencing suffocating traffic jams. Although Mumbai and Bengaluru have long been known for their gridlock, recent reports indicate that Bengaluru now holds the title as India’s most congested city, surpassing even Mumbai. Globally, it is also considered one of the worst cities for traffic.
According to a congestion index that rates cities based on traffic severity, with scores between 800-1000 indicating extreme congestion, Bengaluru leads the pack, surpassing Mumbai’s score of 787. Bengaluru is notably the only Indian city to cross the 800-mark. Delhi follows with 747 points, and Hyderabad ranks fourth with 718 points. These findings were shared at the Mobility Symposium, organized by Move In Sync, a company specializing in employee commuting solutions.
Bengaluru’s traffic woes are so notorious that a recent viral Google Maps screenshot humorously suggested walking would be faster than driving during peak hours. However, local authorities claim that the newly inaugurated double-decker flyover at Silk Board Junction, one of the busiest spots in the city, has brought noticeable relief to the city’s traffic flow.
Despite the attempts to alleviate traffic, Bengaluru continues to grapple with severe congestion, with many residents voicing frustration over the daily delays and long commutes. The double-decker flyover, while a welcome addition, is just one of the many infrastructure upgrades needed to tackle the city’s overwhelming traffic burden. Experts believe that more sustainable solutions, such as improved public transport, traffic management systems, and a focus on reducing vehicle density, are essential to truly ease the city’s gridlock. Until then, Bengaluru’s status as India’s most congested city seems unlikely to change.
