On October 11, Gulshan Khatoon, a pregnant woman, was denied admission to Ranchi’s Sadar Hospital despite delivery complications. Referred to another hospital (RIMS), she could not access an ambulance and ultimately gave birth on the roadside, sparking widespread outrage.
The incident has triggered criticism of the healthcare services in Jharkhand, with many pointing out that the situation for poor, tribal, and backward women remains dire. Social media users condemned the lack of basic medical facilities, arguing that schemes like the Maiya Samman Yojana are superficial without addressing the fundamental issues within the healthcare system. One user noted that addressing these challenges would eliminate the need for such schemes, while others highlighted the struggles faced by Dalits and tribals in accessing adequate treatment.
In response to the outcry, the state government has launched an investigation, with Ranchi’s Deputy Commissioner forming a team to look into potential negligence. Government hospitals across Jharkhand are notorious for their poor conditions.
