India continues to lead the migration trends to OECD countries, with a staggering 3.2 lakh Indians migrating in 2022, according to the latest International Migration Outlook 2024 report. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which includes developed nations such as the US, UK, and Canada, has seen a consistent rise in Indian migration over the years. The report highlights a 35% increase in migration from India compared to the previous year, with 5.6 lakh Indians making the move to these countries in 2022.
The United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada remain the most sought-after destinations for Indian immigrants. In 2022, the UK and the US together welcomed over 1.12 lakh Indians, while Canada received around 1.18 lakh. However, Canada’s intake saw a slight decrease of 8% compared to the previous year.
Following India, China secured the second spot with 3.2 lakh new migrants to OECD countries in 2022. Russia ranked third, with 2.68 lakh citizens migrating, surpassing Romania in the process. The report also reveals that the majority of Indian migrants move to OECD countries through labor channels, indicating the ongoing demand for skilled and semi-skilled workers in these nations.
The trend of increasing migration from India, particularly in the form of international students and skilled labor, is expected to continue, solidifying the country’s place as the leading source of immigrants in the coming years.
