India’s Green Leap: Hydrogen Train Set for December Trial Run

A Milestone in Sustainable Railways with Indigenous Innovation

Kochi: India is gearing up for a significant step in its green mission with the launch of its first hydrogen-fueled train, set to begin trial runs in December on the 90-km heritage line between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. With this development, India will join the ranks of Germany, Sweden, Japan, and China as one of the few nations operating hydrogen-powered trains. The Indian Railways plans to roll out 35 such trains across the country by 2025.

Manufactured at Tamil Nadu’s Integral Coach Factory, the train employs cutting-edge fuel cell technology, wherein hydrogen reacts with oxygen to generate electricity, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. Each train comprises six coaches, each equipped with 100 kW fuel cells, capable of achieving speeds of up to 140 km/h. While the construction cost per train is estimated at ₹80 crore, ₹70 crore has been allocated for upgrading the Jind-Sonipat line for this initiative.

Besides being eco-friendly, the hydrogen train offers a significant reduction in carbon and noise pollution compared to diesel engines. It is expected to operate primarily on heritage and hilly routes where diesel trains currently run, eliminating the need for expensive electrification and aligning with the Indian Railways’ goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.

The project also showcases notable Malayali contributions. Thomas Joseph, a Kottayam native and chief innovation officer at Fluitron, a US-based hydrogen technology firm, has played a pivotal role in developing high-pressure hydrogen storage and filling systems. These systems, built in Coimbatore, will be integral to the railway’s hydrogen fuel infrastructure, with a dedicated filling plant being established near Jind station.

This endeavor underscores India’s commitment to combating climate change by integrating sustainable innovations into its transportation sector.
