Sriharikota: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reached a historic milestone on Wednesday, successfully executing its 100th mission with the GSLV-F15 rocket carrying the NVS-02 navigation satellite from the Sriharikota launch center.
This mission holds significant importance as it is the first launch under ISRO Chairman V Narayanan, who recently took charge. Additionally, it marks ISRO’s maiden space launch of 2024, further strengthening India’s capabilities in satellite-based navigation.
At precisely 6:23 AM, after a 27.30-hour countdown, the 50.9-metre-tall GSLV-F15 rocket ignited, soaring into the sky with a trail of dense smoke, showcasing India’s technological prowess in space exploration. The mission follows the success of GSLV-F12, which deployed the NVS-01 satellite on May 29, 2023, as part of India’s second-generation navigation satellite series.
According to ISRO, the NVS-02 satellite will play a crucial role in enhancing terrestrial, aerial, and maritime navigation. Its applications extend to precision agriculture, fleet management, location-based mobile services, emergency response solutions, satellite orbit determination, IoT-based services, and improved timing solutions.
The successful launch of GSLV-F15 reaffirms ISRO’s commitment to advancing space technology, contributing to India’s self-reliance in satellite navigation, and further strengthening its NavIC system—India’s indigenous alternative to GPS.
