In the Maharashtra legislative assembly’s special three-day session, 105 members, including several prominent opposition leaders, took the oath of office on Sunday. This marked the second day of the assembly’s reconstitution, following state elections that sparked controversy over alleged electronic voting machine (EVM) manipulation.
The first day of the session saw opposition members from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance boycotting the oath-taking ceremony in protest against alleged EVM misuse during the elections. However, leaders such as Nana Patole, Vijay Wadettiwar, Amit Deshmukh of the Congress, Jitendra Awhad of the NCP (SP), and Aaditya Thackeray of Shiv Sena (UBT) participated on Sunday, signaling a return to parliamentary proceedings.
Saturday’s session witnessed 173 MLAs taking their oaths, while nine members who were absent over the weekend are expected to complete the process on Monday. The assembly session has also been notable for the induction of several first-time legislators, drawing family members and supporters to celebrate this milestone.
The ongoing session underscores the high-stakes dynamics of Maharashtra politics, with opposition and ruling party members setting the stage for legislative debates in the months ahead. The presence of prominent leaders and newly elected representatives highlights a mix of continuity and change in the assembly’s composition.
