Modi Discusses Ukraine Conflict and Bangladesh’s Minority Safety in Call with Biden

Indian Prime Minister Advocates Dialogue in Ukraine and Highlights Concerns Over Hindu Safety in Bangladesh

Washington: During a recent phone conversation with US President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Modi’s remarks followed his visit to Kyiv, where he reiterated to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that disputes should not be settled through warfare. The conversation also touched on the importance of an early return to peace and stability in the region, according to a statement from India’s foreign ministry.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby acknowledged the US’s support for any nation’s efforts to help President Zelensky achieve a just peace, reflecting the White House’s positive reception of Modi’s message. The White House’s readout of the call praised Modi for his commitment to peace and ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine, including aid to its energy sector. Both leaders reaffirmed their support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in line with international law and the UN Charter.

Despite closer ties with Washington, India has maintained its independent stance, refraining from joining US sanctions against Russia. Instead, India has capitalized on its historical relations with Moscow, securing cheaper oil amid the conflict.

The discussion also addressed the situation in Bangladesh, where the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after mass protests has led to concerns about minority safety, particularly for Hindus. Modi and Biden underscored the need to restore law and order in Bangladesh and ensure the protection of minorities. Although the security situation has improved since the initial unrest, the Indian government remains focused on safeguarding the interests of the Hindu community in the predominantly Muslim nation.
