Mumbai experienced significant disruption late Sunday night as heavy rainfall led to widespread waterlogging across various parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has since issued orange to red alerts for Mumbai and adjoining suburban areas, warning of continued heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
In a social media update, IMD noted that light to moderate rainfall would persist in Mumbai and nearby regions over the next few hours. The warning also highlighted the potential for moderate thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph, urging residents to stay alert.
The city had already seen light showers on May 23, with the IMD forecasting generally cloudy skies and heavy rain throughout the day. The downpour has not only disrupted local life in Mumbai but also affected surrounding regions. In Maharashtra’s Thane district, a massive traffic jam was reported on the Bhiwandi-Wada road after torrential rain caused severe damage to the road surface. Large potholes and ongoing construction work made the traffic situation worse.
Meanwhile, in Odisha, the Koraput district recorded its highest rainfall in 24 years, as per IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty. She noted that widespread rainfall is expected across the state in the coming days due to pre-monsoon showers and an impending cyclonic circulation. An orange alert has been issued for several districts in Odisha, indicating the likelihood of continued heavy rain. The southwest monsoon has already reached Kerala, intensifying rain activity in several parts of the country.
