NASA astronaut Donald Pettit has unveiled breathtaking images of the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela, captured from the International Space Station (ISS). The photos showcase a dazzling aerial view of the illuminated Ganges River pilgrimage at night, capturing the vast scale of the world’s largest human gathering. Sharing the images on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Pettit commented, “2025 Maha Kumbh Mela Ganges River pilgrimage from the ISS at night. The largest human gathering in the world is well lit.”
The festival, held once every 12 years in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has already drawn over 110 million participants in its initial weeks, with numbers expected to soar until its conclusion on February 26, 2025. Central to the Maha Kumbh Mela is the ritual of a sacred dip at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, believed to cleanse sins and grant liberation (moksha).
Despite cold weather, millions continue to arrive for this spiritually significant event, which transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries. Authorities anticipate record-breaking attendance on Mauni Amavasya, January 29, 2025, with up to 450 million visitors expected.
