New Delhi: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR following a sharp spike in air pollution. The decision comes as the Air Quality Index (AQI) touched an alarming 457, categorized as ‘severe+’ on Sunday evening. The implementation of Stage IV, effective from Monday at 8:00 am, introduces stricter curbs while continuing measures under Stages I, II, and III.
Permitted Activities
- Trucks carrying essentials: Trucks transporting critical goods or services are allowed entry. Vehicles running on LNG, CNG, electric power, or BS-VI diesel are exempted.
- Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs): EVs, CNG, and BS-VI diesel LCVs registered outside Delhi are permitted only if carrying essential goods or services.
- Education continuity: Classes VI to IX and XI may shift to online mode at the discretion of state governments and GNCTD.
- Work-from-home (WFH): Offices can operate at 50% capacity, with the remaining employees working remotely.
Restricted Activities
- Non-essential truck entry: Trucks not involved in essential services are barred from entering Delhi.
- Diesel goods vehicles ban: Diesel-operated medium and heavy goods vehicles (MGVs and HGVs) registered in Delhi, classified as BS-IV or below, are prohibited unless providing essential services.
- Construction and demolition: All construction and demolition projects are strictly prohibited.
The CAQM has urged residents to adhere to the Citizen Charter under GRAP to collectively improve air quality. The public is encouraged to reduce vehicular emissions, limit outdoor exposure, and support sustainable practices to combat this crisis. The stringent measures aim to curb pollution levels and ensure a healthier environment for Delhi-NCR residents.
