In the upcoming Ganderbal Assembly elections, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is facing a formidable challenge, making this election anything but a walk in the park. The seat, historically held by Abdullah and his family, is now a battleground with 24 candidates vying for victory, among which four are seen as significant threats to the incumbent.
One of the key challengers is Sarjan Barkati, a fiery cleric known for his inflammatory speeches and association with militant activities. Barkati, who gained notoriety following the 2016 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen poster boy Burhan Wani, has been a polarizing figure. Despite being incarcerated under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and having his nomination rejected previously due to procedural issues, he has filed his nomination papers for Ganderbal. His presence adds an element of high drama to the electoral fray, although the cleric’s candidacy may not substantially shake Abdullah’s stronghold in Ganderbal.
The real challenge for Abdullah comes from Bashir Ahmad Mir of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Ishfaq Jabbar, an Independent backed by the J&K United Movement (JKUM). Mir, who previously contested from Kangan and gave a tough fight to the NC’s Mian Altaf Ahmad, has shifted to Ganderbal after the Kangan seat was reserved for Scheduled Tribes. His move is strategic, leveraging the PDP’s established presence in the region to pose a significant challenge.
Ishfaq Jabbar, who won from Ganderbal as an NC candidate in 2014 but was expelled from the party, has maintained a strong presence in the constituency. His deep-rooted connections and formation of JKUM position him as a serious contender.
Adding to the complexity is Sahil Farooq, who has filed as an Independent candidate against the Congress, signaling further fragmentation of the vote base. Omar Abdullah, aware of the stakes, has adopted a gesture of humility, extending a personal appeal to voters, reflecting his recognition of the competitive nature of this election.
Overall, while Omar Abdullah remains a prominent figure and a favored candidate, the presence of multiple strong contenders, including the controversial cleric and seasoned politicians, underscores that victory is far from assured.
