
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Dras today to commemorate the 25th anniversary of India’s victory over Pakistani forces in the Kargil conflict. At 9:20 am, he will pay homage to the soldiers who lost their lives during the war at the local war memorial. The celebrations, which began yesterday, will include interactions with the widows of the fallen soldiers.
In addition to honoring the soldiers, Modi will inaugurate the construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel, aimed at improving troop mobility along the border. This 4.1 km twin tunnel, part of the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road project, is being built at an altitude of 15,800 feet and is designed to be operational in all weather conditions. Former Army Chief General V.P. Malik, Lt. Gen. Y.K. Joshi, Brigadier S.S. Shekhawat, Col. Sonam Wangchuk, and Girdhari Lal Batra, father of martyred Capt. Vikram Batra, will also attend the event.
