A tragic stampede at Baba Siddhanath Temple in Makhdumpur, Jehanabad district, Bihar, resulted in the deaths of at least seven people and injuries to nine others early on Monday. Jehanabad District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey confirmed the incident, stating that the situation is now under control. Local authorities, including the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, have visited the site to assess the situation and are working on identifying the deceased and managing the aftermath.
The incident comes in the wake of a similar tragedy that occurred at a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on July 2, which claimed 121 lives, predominantly women. That disaster, during a ‘satsang’ led by a religious preacher, was marked by severe overcrowding and mismanagement. Both incidents underscore critical issues regarding safety and crowd control at large religious events in India, highlighting the need for improved measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
