Thiruvananthapuram: In a show of solidarity, public workers have joined ASHA activists in their ongoing hunger strike, intensifying the demand for better wages and benefits. A mass fast will take place today at Samaravedi, with participants standing in support of the ASHA workers who have been protesting for their rights since February 10. The event will be inaugurated by Dr. P Geetha at 10 AM.
Women from different professional sectors are also extending their support by fasting at their homes, reinforcing the significance of the struggle led by ASHA workers at the Secretariat steps. The protest is centered around several key demands, including increasing honorariums, introducing retirement benefits, and ensuring pensions for retired workers.
The hunger strike continues with Kerala Asha Health Workers Association State General Secretary M.A. Bindu, along with ASHA workers K.P. Thankamani and Shobha M, who remain steadfast in their protest. Their determination has garnered widespread attention, putting pressure on authorities to address their grievances.
Simultaneously, Anganwadi workers are also engaged in an ongoing strike that has entered its eighth day. They are advocating for ten key demands, including being recognized as government employees and receiving higher honorariums.
With public support growing, the protests by ASHA and Anganwadi workers highlight the broader struggle for fair wages and social security for women workers in Kerala’s essential healthcare and childcare sectors. The government is yet to respond to their demands, but the movement continues to gain momentum.
