A major tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Saturday in the Mustafabad area of New Delhi, where a four-storey residential building collapsed, leaving four people dead and several others feared trapped beneath the debris. According to officials, the incident occurred around 3 am, when most residents were likely asleep.
Emergency services, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Police, responded swiftly to the scene. So far, 14 individuals have been pulled from the wreckage, but tragically, four of them have succumbed to their injuries. Authorities estimate that around 8 to 10 people may still be trapped under the rubble.
Sandeep Lamba, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for North East Delhi, confirmed that the rescue operation remains in progress and efforts are being made to safely extract anyone still caught beneath the debris.
The area has been cordoned off, and heavy machinery is being used to clear the site. The cause of the collapse is not immediately known, but local authorities are expected to launch a detailed investigation once the rescue efforts conclude.
The incident has once again raised concerns about structural safety in densely populated areas of Delhi, where old and poorly maintained buildings are common. The focus remains on saving as many lives as possible in this critical phase of the operation.
