Mayotte, a French territory in the Indian Ocean, has been devastated by Cyclone Chido, one of the most violent storms ever recorded in the region. Early reports indicate that hundreds, potentially thousands, of people have lost their lives, with officials confirming at least 11 fatalities so far. The French Ministry of Interior has warned that it may take days to determine the exact death toll due to the region’s customs, which mandate burials within 24 hours.
The cyclone lashed Mayotte with winds exceeding 200 km/h (124 mph), causing widespread destruction to homes, hospitals, and government buildings. Makeshift housing, already fragile due to the region’s poverty, was severely impacted, leaving thousands homeless. François-Xavier Bieuville, the prefect of Mayotte, expressed grave concerns about the rising toll, estimating that the number of fatalities could climb to several thousand.
French Prime Minister François Bayrou described the cyclone as “unexpectedly violent” and held an inter-ministerial meeting to coordinate rescue and relief operations. France has mobilized emergency workers and supplies to assist the affected population.
European Union President Ursula von der Leyen extended her support to France and the people of Mayotte, affirming that Europe stands ready to provide assistance in the coming days. Cyclone Chido, which has left Mayotte reeling, is expected to make landfall in northern Mozambique next, posing further threats to vulnerable populations.
As the region struggles to recover, the devastation has underscored Mayotte’s long-standing challenges, including poverty and inadequate infrastructure, exacerbating the impact of this catastrophic event.
