Vadodara: Vadodara is festively decorated as it anticipates the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday, who are set to inaugurate the Tata-Airbus manufacturing facility. This landmark event marks a crucial advancement for India’s aviation and defense sectors and is expected to enhance India’s global relationships, particularly with Spain. Residents have expressed their excitement, viewing this visit as a significant step toward strengthening ties between the two nations.
Located within Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), the Tata-Airbus Complex will be the first private-sector venture in India dedicated to military aircraft manufacturing, assembly, and maintenance. This state-of-the-art facility will produce C-295 transport aircraft, with Bharat Electronics Ltd., Bharat Dynamics Ltd., and various private companies involved in creating a complete production and maintenance ecosystem. The Tata-Airbus partnership symbolizes the Indian government’s commitment to its ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The collaboration stems from a landmark agreement signed between the Indian Ministry of Defence and Airbus Defence and Space SA on September 24, 2021, to procure 56 C-295 aircraft, valued at ₹21,935 crore. According to the agreement, 16 of these planes will be delivered from Spain, while the remaining 40 will be manufactured in India, with the first aircraft expected to roll out by September 2026. The entire production and delivery of Indian-assembled C-295 aircraft are set for completion by August 2031, allowing the Indian Air Force to become the largest global operator of this aircraft type.
Prime Minister Modi previously laid the foundation stone for this Vadodara facility in October 2022. With Spanish PM Sanchez’s arrival marking his first visit to India in 18 years, the event underlines the strength of India-Spain relations, following earlier interactions between the two leaders at multilateral summits.
