Thiruvananthapuram: The Higher Education Department has recommended implementing reservation for transgender individuals in government jobs. Minister R Bindu stated at a press conference that the Public Service Commission (PSC) has been requested to consider this demand. A seat had already been reserved earlier for transgender individuals in college admissions.
Reservation will also be extended to LLB admissions. In addition, a job training programme will be organised in collaboration with the Knowledge Economy Mission, the Minister added. This year’s Transgender Arts Festival, titled “Varnappakittu”, will be held in Kozhikode on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On the opening day, a national seminar will be conducted with the participation of representatives and experts from states that have implemented transgender policies.
Awards will be presented to transgender individuals who have showcased excellence in various fields, and the inauguration will also include the announcement of a housing scheme.
Earlier, Kerala launched a landmark housing scheme for transgender community. The scheme brought out by the social justice department will provide financial assistance to transgender persons for both the purchase of land and the construction of a house. Under the scheme, beneficiaries will be provided with three options.
Transgender persons who do not have land or a house will be entitled to an interest-free loan of Rs 15 lakh facilitated by the government. While the interest will be paid by the government, the beneficiary will have to pay back only the principal amount as EMIs.
Transgender persons who possess land or have been allotted land through sponsorship from various agencies can avail an assistance of Rs 6 lakh for house construction. This will be disbursed in three instalments at various stages of construction.
