A heart-wrenching incident has unfolded in Kannur, where a four-month-old baby girl was tragically found dead in a well. Authorities have taken a 12-year-old girl into custody in connection with the case, and she is expected to be moved to a juvenile home today. Before the transfer, she will be presented before the Child Welfare Committee. Investigators have decided not to subject her to intensive questioning, given her young age.
The deceased infant was the only daughter of K. Muthu and Akkamal, a couple originally from Perumballar district in Tamil Nadu who were living in rented quarters in Pappinissery Parakkal. The baby, who was sleeping beside her parents, was discovered missing around 11 PM on Monday. Two girls, aged 12 and 4, both relatives of the family, were also staying in the same house.
During the police inquiry, the 12-year-old girl reportedly admitted to taking the baby while she was asleep and throwing her into a nearby well filled with water. The authorities believe that the tragic act stemmed from deep-seated emotional distress. The girl had lost her father just three months ago, and her mother had abandoned the family earlier. Investigators suspect that she feared losing the affection and attention of those around her, which may have driven her to commit the act.
Valapattanam Inspector T.P. Sumesh confirmed that the girl confessed during individual questioning of the family members. An initial postmortem examination concluded that the infant’s cause of death was drowning. Following the examination, the baby’s body was handed over to her relatives and laid to rest at the Pappinissery public crematorium.
This incident raises concerns about child psychology, trauma, and the importance of emotional support for vulnerable children, particularly those dealing with significant personal loss. The authorities will now determine the next course of action in handling the juvenile’s rehabilitation and welfare.
