Kannur: The tragic death of a tribal couple in a wild elephant attack has led to widespread protests and a hartal declared by both the UDF and BJP in Aralam. The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, has once again highlighted the escalating human-wildlife conflict in the region.
The deceased, Velliyadan and Leela, residents of the 13th Block, were attacked by a wild elephant while returning home after collecting cashew nuts. The elderly couple died on the spot, as the elephant, reportedly hiding behind their house, charged at them.
Following the attack, locals staged intense protests, refusing to let authorities shift the bodies to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital. It was only after intervention from Sub-Collector Karthik Panigrahi and discussions with the police that the bodies were moved around midnight on Sunday.
In response to the growing unrest, Forest Minister A K Saseendran is scheduled to visit Kannur on Monday. An all-party meeting has been called at 3 PM to discuss measures to prevent future incidents. The government has announced ₹20 lakh compensation for the victims’ family, with the first installment set to be disbursed today.
The Aralam region has witnessed multiple wild elephant attacks, with around 20 fatalities reported so far. Many families in the area have abandoned their homes due to the persistent threat of wild animals.
Although construction of an elephant-proof wall along the forest border began two years ago, it remains incomplete, leaving communities vulnerable to wildlife intrusions. Residents and political parties are now demanding immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
