ASHA Workers Continue Protest for 80 Days, Prepare for Next Phase of Agitation

Despite months of protest and no response from the Kerala government, ASHA workers remain resolute in their demands for honorarium hike, pension, and retirement benefits

ASHA workers in Kerala have continued their protest for over 80 days, staging a relentless sit-in outside the state Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram. Even on International Workers’ Day, they remained firm in their stand, seeking justice for their long-standing demands. Since the protest began on February 10, there has been little to no response from the state government, leaving thousands of women health workers disheartened.

Initially, the government appeared indifferent to the protest, with the agitation receiving minimal attention or recognition. Despite exploring multiple forms of peaceful protest and consistently appealing for justice, the ASHA workers feel ignored by the very administration that once claimed to champion labor rights and women’s empowerment.

The Communist-led Kerala government, which has often spoken about workers’ rights, is now being criticized for turning a blind eye to the plight of these frontline health workers. The protesters are demanding a fair increase in their monthly honorarium, the introduction of pension schemes, and retirement benefits.

While discussions were held between the workers and the government at various points, no tangible solution has emerged. Frustrated by the delay and lack of seriousness in addressing their concerns, the ASHA workers are now gearing up for a more intense phase of their struggle, vowing not to give up until their voices are heard and their demands are met.
