The ASHA workers’ strike in Kerala has reached its 37th day, with protesters announcing an indefinite hunger strike starting Thursday, March 20. The hunger strike will begin at 11 am, with three workers initially participating, followed by others joining later. The workers will remain at the protest site near the Secretariat day and night, intensifying their agitation as the government continues to ignore their demands.
In a shift in protest strategy, ASHA workers blocked roads near the Secretariat on the 36th day of the strike, drawing support from various leaders and organizations. The workers also boycotted a training class organized by the National Health Mission (NHM) and gathered at the protest tent on the Secretariat steps. Police had deployed barricades and other equipment to manage the situation.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala pledged to raise the issue directly with the Chief Minister and in the Assembly, while BJP state president K. Surendran assured pressure on the Central government. Several MLAs and other leaders also expressed solidarity with the protesting workers.
The ASHA workers’ strike highlights their ongoing struggle for better wages, working conditions, and recognition, as they continue to fight for their rights amidst government inaction.
