Renowned music composer Ilaiyaraaja has announced the formation of a girls’ orchestra to honor the memory of his daughter, Bhavatharini, who passed away last year. A National Award-winning singer and music director, Bhavatharini had expressed a strong desire to create an orchestra dedicated to young female musicians. On February 12, which marked her birthday, Ilaiyaraaja made the heartfelt announcement during an event held in her remembrance.
Speaking about the initiative, the veteran composer shared how a recent experience in Malaysia reminded him of his daughter’s dream. “Bhavatharini’s last wish was to start a girls’ orchestra. Just two days ago, I witnessed several girls’ groups perform in Malaysia, and it brought back memories of what she had told me,” he said.
Ilaiyaraaja also outlined the selection process for the orchestra, emphasizing that participation will be limited to school and college-going girls under the age of 15. The selection process will be personally overseen by him, with auditions open to talented young girls from around the world. He revealed that he had already shortlisted two orchestras in Malaysia and will soon finalize the lineup. Once the selection process is complete, he will officially announce the orchestra’s formation.
Bhavatharini, known for her soft-spoken nature and melodious voice, was the only daughter of the legendary composer. She gained national recognition when she won the National Award for her soulful rendition of Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu…, a song composed by her father for the Tamil film Bharathi. Apart from being a singer, she was also a talented music director, actively working on multiple film scores at the time of her untimely demise.
Tragically, Bhavatharini passed away in Sri Lanka, where she had been undergoing medical treatment. Through this initiative, Ilaiyaraaja not only preserves her musical legacy but also empowers young female musicians to pursue their passion, ensuring that Bhavatharini’s dream continues to inspire generations to come.
