Kottayam: After a significant gap, the Central Government’s affordable ‘Bharat Rice’ has re-entered the Kerala market, bringing relief to consumers. Alongside rice, large quantities of wheat are now being supplied to major flour companies, expanding the availability of essential commodities.
Initially distributed in areas like Thrissur, Palakkad, and Aluva, Bharat Rice is now sold at a reduced price of Rs 22 per kg, down from Rs 29 earlier this year. Available in 5 kg and 10 kg packs, consumers can purchase without any restrictions on quantity. The distribution is facilitated through the National Cooperative Consumer’s Federation (NCCF), ensuring easy access to the public.
For wheat, companies can now procure stock by submitting quotations through the online platform ‘Value Junction.’ Registrations for tender participation can be made every Friday until 2 pm. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) will finalize the quantity of wheat to be distributed, allowing companies to purchase between one and 10 tonnes. Wheat prices may vary slightly across Kerala districts, ranging from Rs 25.76 to Rs 26.80 per kg.
This initiative provides consumers with affordable options for essential staples while streamlining procurement processes for companies, aiming to stabilize the supply and price of rice and wheat in Kerala. The reintroduction of Bharat Rice at a reduced price and the streamlined wheat procurement process highlight the government’s efforts to ensure food security and affordability in Kerala.
