Kannur: A tragic incident unfolded during the Theyyam festival at Muchiriyantharavatu Kavu in Azhikode, Kannur, when a firecracker exploded on the ground instead of bursting in the air as intended. The mishap, which occurred around 4:30 AM on Friday, left four people injured, including a 14-year-old boy.
According to eyewitnesses, the explosion took place as the festival reached its peak, when devotees had gathered in large numbers to witness the ritual performances. Two of the injured individuals sustained severe burns and were immediately rushed to hospitals—one to Mangalore and the other to a private hospital in Kannur. The teenage boy, who was found unconscious with burns on his arms and chest, was also given emergency medical attention.
The Azhikode police confirmed that the accident occurred due to a misfire, where a firecracker meant to burst in the air detonated on the ground instead, causing injuries to those standing nearby. Locals reported that some unburnt firecrackers may have remained on the ground before suddenly exploding near a well, triggering panic among festival attendees.
Muchiriyantharavatu Kavu is a family-run temple known for its spectacular Theyyam rituals, with Bappiriyan Theyyam being the festival’s main attraction. As part of the tradition, the Theyyam performer runs across a paddy field, climbs a coconut tree, and plucks tender coconuts before descending. The firecracker accident occurred just before this performance, casting a shadow over the festivities.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the mishap, and safety concerns regarding the use of fireworks at religious festivals are once again being raised.
