Kozhikode: Authorities at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) have announced the resolution of a diesel leakage incident at their storage facility in Elathur Depot, Kozhikode. Regional Manager M.J. Muneer attributed the spill to a malfunction in the overflow monitoring system. Approximately 600–700 liters of diesel reportedly leaked, flowing into a nearby drain located close to the national highway and railway tracks.
Residents in the area expressed dissatisfaction, noting that similar spills have occurred previously. Concerns were raised about potential environmental damage, including the contamination of local rivers, the sea, and nearby wells. The situation prompted a gathering of locals in protest, calling for stringent measures to prevent future incidents.
A joint inspection involving the Pollution Control Board, Disaster Management Department, and Health Department is scheduled for Thursday to assess the impact. Deputy Collector Anitha Kumari assured the public that the issue has been addressed and there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Despite these reassurances, residents continue to demand accountability and long-term solutions to mitigate the risk of recurring fuel spills. Enhanced safety protocols and regular monitoring systems are being urged to prevent environmental hazards and ensure public safety. Authorities must also consider the long-term environmental and health impacts of such incidents. Repeated fuel leaks not only endanger local ecosystems but also threaten the livelihood of residents who depend on clean water and natural resources. Community members have called for transparent investigations, stricter enforcement of safety measures, and better communication from HPCL to restore trust. Ensuring sustainable and proactive safety protocols will be critical in preventing future spills and addressing public concerns effectively.
