Heatwave Alert: Yellow Alert Issued in 11 Kerala Districts

Temperatures Soar Up to 38°C; High UV Index Adds to Concerns

A yellow alert has been issued for 11 districts in Kerala as the state braces for a significant rise in temperatures today. The affected districts include Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Thrissur and Palakkad are expected to experience the highest temperatures, soaring up to 38°C, while Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod may see temperatures reaching 37°C. Alappuzha and Malappuram could record temperatures of up to 36°C.

These temperatures are 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above the usual range, significantly increasing the risk of heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised residents to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and wearing light, breathable clothing.

Adding to the concerns, Kerala recorded a high ultraviolet (UV) index in the last 24 hours, with the Kottarakkara station in Kollam reporting the highest levels. Prolonged exposure to high UV levels can cause skin damage, sunburn, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Authorities have urged people to use sunscreen, wear hats, and seek shade whenever possible.

The combination of soaring temperatures and high UV index underscores the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures. Residents, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly and children, are advised to limit outdoor activities and stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day. The state government has also been urged to take proactive steps, such as setting up cooling centers and distributing water, to mitigate the impact of the heatwave.
