Kerala is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts widespread heavy rain across the state, caused by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. An orange alert has been declared for Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur districts on Thursday, with rainfall expected to range between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. Meanwhile, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are under a yellow alert, anticipating rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm.
The low-pressure system, which originated in the southwest Bay of Bengal, is forecasted to move towards the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coast within 24 hours, intensifying rainfall in Kerala. Additionally, six districts—Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur—are likely to experience heavy rain on Friday.
The IMD has also issued a warning for squally weather along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast until December 14, with wind speeds reaching 35-45 km/h and gusts up to 55 km/h. Fishermen are strongly advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.
