Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in six districts of Kerala—Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, and Ernakulam. The rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, is expected to persist until September 13, with rainfall predicted to range between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in these regions.
In response to the weather forecast, authorities have advised residents to avoid areas prone to landslides, landslips, and waterlogging. The state disaster management authority has also issued warnings to the public, urging them to stay vigilant and consider relocating to safer areas if necessary. People living in low-lying or flood-prone regions are particularly advised to take precautionary measures.
The IMD has further warned that the impending downpour could result in traffic disruptions, reduced visibility, power outages due to waterlogging or uprooted trees, damage to crops, and flash floods. Additionally, squally weather with wind speeds between 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, is expected along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts until September 11. As a result, fishermen have been advised not to venture out into the sea during this period.
In addition to the six districts under the yellow alert, on Monday, a yellow alert was also issued for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod. The public is urged to stay informed about weather updates and exercise caution during this period of heavy rain
