Kerala is bracing for intense rainfall in the coming days, with a yellow alert announced for several districts. Heavy rain is expected to continue today across the state, particularly in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Palakkad districts, where the forecast suggests isolated heavy showers. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) defines heavy rainfall as measuring between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
The Central Meteorological Department predicts moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Malappuram over the next three hours, with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 40 km/h. This weather pattern is anticipated to extend over the coming days. Both Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, along with Pathanamthitta and Idukki, are under yellow alerts on Friday and Saturday due to the likelihood of further rain.
The cyclonic system currently sits over the Straits of Mannar and Sri Lanka, while a cyclonic gyre influences the South Bay of Bengal and the South Arabian Sea. Due to these conditions, Kerala can expect light to moderate rainfall with occasional thunderstorms for the next five days, as per the Meteorological Center’s advisory. While the forecast indicates significant rain, the IMD has confirmed that fishing activities along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts are not expected to be impacted today.
