Heavy Rains Expected in Kerala: Orange Alert in Four Districts, Yellow in Eight

Authorities Urge Vigilance as Weather Warnings Issued Across the State; Public Advised to Follow Safety Guidelines

The Central Meteorological Department has issued severe weather alerts in Kerala, warning of heavy rains in isolated areas. An orange alert has been declared in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, while a yellow alert is in place in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram districts.

In light of the alerts, authorities are urging the public—especially those in landslide-prone, low-lying, or riverbank areas—to take immediate precautions. People living near rivers, dams, or regions vulnerable to flash floods should be ready to relocate to safer places following instructions from local authorities. Disaster relief camps are operational in vulnerable regions, and residents are encouraged to coordinate with local bodies or revenue departments for shelter.

Due to the likelihood of strong winds, residents in houses with unstable roofs or structures are advised to be extra cautious. The risk of falling trees, collapsing posts, and damaged signboards must be taken seriously. All citizens are encouraged to report hazardous conditions to the authorities and avoid risky behaviors such as venturing near water bodies, climbing bridges, or taking selfies during the rains.

Travel during heavy rain is strongly discouraged, particularly to hilly areas or places with active roadworks. Road safety must be prioritized, especially in regions susceptible to flooding or erosion.

Everyone in affected areas is advised to prepare an emergency kit, details of which can be found on the Kerala SDMA website. For assistance or to report emergencies, residents can call the toll-free numbers 1077 and 1070, which are available 24/7 through district control rooms.

Further guidance, including the official Orange Book 2024 for disaster preparedness, is also available online. Alerts may be updated, so citizens should monitor official SDMA social media channels for real-time information.
