Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted widespread rainfall across Kerala, lasting until December 4. The state is expected to receive heavy showers ranging from 7 cm to 11 cm, prompting weather alerts in multiple districts.
A yellow alert has been issued for eight districts, including Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, Alappuzha, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm. Meanwhile, an orange alert, which signals heavier rainfall between 64.5 mm and 204.4 mm, has been declared for Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur.
Looking ahead, the IMD has placed red alerts on December 2 for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Orange alerts have been expanded to more districts, including Palakkad, Ernakulam, and Idukki on December 1 and December 2, with additional warnings for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad through December 3. Yellow alerts remain in effect for various districts during this period.
The IMD has also cautioned about squally weather conditions along Kerala’s southern coast, with wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph and gusts up to 55 kmph. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.
Authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines as the state prepares for potentially disruptive weather. Authorities have also advised residents in vulnerable areas to take necessary precautions, including avoiding travel during heavy downpours and staying updated on weather bulletins. Relief teams and disaster management authorities are on standby to address any emergencies arising from flooding, landslides, or other rain-related incidents.
