Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Meteorological Department has warned of a potential Black Sea phenomenon along the Kerala coastline in the coming days. This unusual weather event, characterized by intensified sea activity and elevated wave heights, poses a serious threat of sea erosion. According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), waves ranging between 0.4 to 0.8 meters are expected along the Kerala coast until 11:30 PM on May 14, 2025. Similarly, along the Kanyakumari coast, wave heights may reach up to 1.0 meter, increasing the risk of coastal damage.
In light of this, the Disaster Management Authority has issued a warning to fishermen, coastal dwellers, and local authorities, urging heightened vigilance and strict adherence to safety guidelines. People are advised to stay away from high-risk areas, especially seashores and rocky coastlines. The launching and landing of small fishing boats, yachts, and other sea vessels should be strictly avoided during this period. Moreover, all beach-based tourism activities must be temporarily suspended until further notice from INCOIS.
Fishing boats currently at sea are advised to return and be safely anchored with proper spacing to prevent collisions. Fishermen should also ensure the protection of their equipment. The public is strongly advised to avoid sea-related travel and maintain a high level of caution due to the risk of coastal erosion and rough sea conditions.
As Kerala braces for the effects of the black sea phenomenon, the priority remains public safety. Residents living in vulnerable coastal zones are urged to cooperate with local authorities and act swiftly in response to any emergency instructions. Early caution and preventive measures can significantly reduce the risks posed by this weather event, ensuring the safety of lives and livelihoods along the coast.
