The Kerala High Court has stayed the sentence of Nirmalakumaran Nair, the third accused in the Sharon murder case, allowing him to be released on bail. The decision came from a division bench consisting of Justice P.B. Sureshkumar and Justice Jobin Sebastian, which also accepted the appeal of Greeshma, the first accused, who was sentenced to death by the Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court. The government has been issued a notice regarding the appeal.
Nirmalakumaran Nair was sentenced to three years in prison for destroying evidence in the case. However, the trial court had granted him bail on the grounds that his sentence was relatively minor. The High Court upheld this decision, stating that he could be released on a bond of ₹50,000 and two sureties of the same amount. The stay was granted as the final appeal hearing is unlikely to conclude soon. The court also noted that by the time the appeal process is completed, Nirmalakumaran Nair’s sentence may already have been served.
Meanwhile, Greeshma has filed an appeal to overturn her death sentence, arguing that the trial court misinterpreted the evidence. She maintains that she had no intention to kill Sharon and disputes the investigation team’s conclusion that Sharon was an obstacle to her marriage. Greeshma is currently incarcerated at Attakulangara Jail in Thiruvananthapuram as her appeal process continues.
The Sharon murder case has drawn significant public attention due to its shocking nature and legal complexities. The High Court’s intervention in suspending Nirmalakumaran Nair’s sentence adds a new dimension to the case, while Greeshma’s fight against her death sentence will be closely watched in the coming months.
