Intense Rain and Thunderstorms Expected: Precautions Issued for Kerala Residents

IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Three Districts, Including Thiruvananthapuram

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted isolated rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across parts of Kerala from today until November 20. A yellow alert has been declared for Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall measuring between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

The advisory also mentions that fishing activities along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts remain unrestricted. However, fishermen are strongly advised to avoid venturing into the Lakshadweep region today due to potential risks.

Safety Precautions During Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms are known to pose significant risks, including damage to lives, property, and infrastructure. Residents are urged to follow these safety measures:

Seek shelter in a sturdy building at the first sign of lightning; avoid open areas.
Keep windows and doors closed and maintain distance from walls and floors.
Unplug electrical appliances and refrain from using corded telephones. Mobile phones are safe to use.
Avoid standing under trees or parking vehicles near them.
Stay inside vehicles during thunderstorms without extending any body parts outside.
Suspend activities like fishing, boating, or bathing in water bodies when clouds gather. Move to the nearest shore immediately.
If caught in the open, adopt a low crouch position by keeping your feet together and rolling into a ball-like shape. Remember, a person struck by lightning does not carry an electric charge; administering first aid promptly within the first 30 seconds can be life-saving. Seek immediate medical attention for the victim.

These measures aim to protect lives and minimize the risks associated with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the affected districts.
