Kerala CM Directs Comprehensive Security Plan for Thrissur Pooram 2024

Pinarayi Vijayan Emphasizes Safety, Cultural Preservation, and Smooth Conduct of Festival

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has instructed officials to develop a detailed security action plan for the upcoming Thrissur Pooram, scheduled for May 6. Chairing a high-level meeting, the CM emphasized the need for a seamless festival experience, balancing the preservation of traditional rituals with robust safety measures.

Last year, police intervention in the fireworks display and festival rituals sparked controversy, leading to widespread criticism. The fireworks, initially planned for early morning, were delayed until daylight, disappointing attendees. To avoid a repeat, the CM directed strict enforcement of safety laws, court orders, and explosive regulations. He also called for coordinated efforts between the police and district administration to ensure proper licensing, elephant welfare, and public safety.

The CM urged the Devaswom Board to resolve the land rent dispute concerning the Vadakkumnathan Temple grounds used for the Pooram exhibition. Additionally, he emphasized improved waste management, road maintenance, and streetlight repairs under the Thrissur Corporation’s supervision.

Medical preparedness was another focus, with instructions to deploy adequate doctors, paramedics, and ambulances. Both government and private hospitals in Thrissur were asked to remain on high alert for emergencies. Fire safety measures, including mock drills and sufficient personnel at fireworks venues, were also prioritized.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister Suresh Gopi, state ministers, and senior officials. The CM stressed that all arrangements should uphold the festival’s cultural grandeur while ensuring safety and smooth execution.
