New Delhi: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has formally requested a relief package of ₹2,200 crore from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support rehabilitation and reconstruction in the Wayanad region, which has been severely impacted by a recent landslide disaster. The two leaders met on Tuesday morning at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi for a 40-minute discussion, marking their first official meeting since Modi began his third term as Prime Minister.
The request for financial aid follows earlier efforts by the Kerala government, including a submission for ₹1,200 crore based on data gathered by a central expert team that visited the disaster site. Kerala Chief Secretary Dr. V. Venu also conducted an on-site assessment in Wayanad and provided a supplementary report to the central government.
Despite these initiatives, the state has not yet received any financial assistance from the Centre, prompting the Chief Minister to personally travel to Delhi to advocate for the urgently needed funds. The relief package request includes detailed plans for the reconstruction of infrastructure and rehabilitation of those affected by the landslide.
After the meeting, Chief Minister Vijayan returned to Thiruvananthapuram. He has also called for an all-party meeting on Thursday in Thiruvananthapuram to discuss the state’s response to the Wayanad tragedy and coordinate further relief efforts.
