The Kerala government has decided to grant a holiday on October 11 for all educational institutions across the state in observance of the Navratri festival. This announcement was made by Education Minister V Sivankutty, who confirmed that an official order would be issued soon. Although the public holiday for Mahanavami is set for October 12 in Kerala, this decision aligns with the Navratri traditions of Ayudh Puja and Maha Ashtami.
According to the customs, books are usually placed for puja on the evening of Mahanavami. However, this year, Maha Ashtami, which includes the performance of Ayudh Puja, will be observed on October 10. Recognizing this, the National Teachers Union (NTU) made a formal request to the Education Minister to declare a holiday on October 11.
In response to the NTU’s request and considering the significance of the festival, the government has accommodated the needs of students and educators by providing an additional holiday. This will allow schools to prepare for the festive rituals, including placing books for worship as part of the Ayudh Puja observance. The official holiday on October 11 ensures that all educational institutions can honor the traditions of Navratri without disruption. The holiday on October 11 also offers students and educators the opportunity to fully engage in the Navratri rituals and celebrations without any academic interruptions.
