Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has decided to impose a trawling ban across the state from June 9 to July 31. The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Fisheries Minister Abdul Gafoor with representatives of the fisheries sector.
The ban is enforced during the fish breeding season to protect marine resources. During this period, a large number of fish that are ready to spawn are found in coastal waters. Intensive fishing activities at this time can result in the capture of breeding fish before they lay eggs, reducing the number of fish offspring in the next generation.
Experts warn that continued large-scale fishing during the breeding season could lead to a significant decline in marine fish stocks over time. The trawling ban aims to ensure the conservation of fish resources and support the sustainable growth of Kerala’s marine ecosystem.
