The rain warning in Kerala has been updated with a yellow alert now issued for 10 districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), these areas can expect isolated instances of heavy rain, classified as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely across various parts of the state from November 3 to 5.
The recent rainfall has been intense in some areas, with Kannur’s Chemperi receiving 49 mm of rain in just 45 minutes, while Aralat saw 42 mm and Peringome 37 mm in similar timeframes. Muvattupuzha recorded 25 mm within half an hour, and Kottayam’s Aymanam received 30 mm in the same period.
Heavy rain has raised water levels in several dams across Kerala, notably the Malampuzha Dam, which is nearing its peak level of 115.06 meters for the first time since 2018. Authorities have prepared to open spillway shutters to manage the rising water levels, and tourist entry to the dam will be restricted until further notice.
Officials urge residents in affected districts to stay alert and take necessary precautions as weather conditions remain unpredictable. With water levels high and the potential for more intense rainfall, local authorities have advised people living near rivers and low-lying areas to monitor updates closely and be prepared for possible evacuations if water levels continue to rise. Emergency response teams are on standby to manage any issues caused by flash floods or landslides, and the public is encouraged to limit outdoor activities during heavy rains and thunderstorms to ensure safety.
