Kerala has initiated joint inspections by the police and the Motor Vehicles Department to reduce road accidents across the state. The first phase of this campaign focuses on accident-prone black spots, with enforcement teams cracking down on violations such as speeding, drunk driving, overloading, and reckless behavior.
District-level Road Safety Authority meetings will also be convened to design a blueprint for road infrastructure improvements and enhanced traffic management. All highway patrol vehicles equipped with speed radars and breathalyzers will operate round-the-clock to ensure stricter monitoring. In addition, the Traffic IG has been directed to recommend the installation of AI cameras on state highways and minor roads, aiming to automate traffic rule enforcement. Pedestrian safety awareness campaigns are also being launched as part of this initiative.
Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar, speaking on Good Morning with R Sreekanthan Nair, emphasized the importance of practical solutions to road safety issues. He noted that while local insights can help address these problems, the state faces financial constraints in implementing recommendations from expensive studies. The minister highlighted the lack of central government support for such initiatives, which has slowed down critical road safety reforms.
The state government has also released an awareness video to educate the public on traffic safety and encourage responsible driving habits. These measures aim to create safer roads and reduce the alarming number of accidents in Kerala.
