The Kerala police investigating the Venjaramoodu mass murder case have identified that the financial debt as the primary motive behind Affan’s actions. Despite his father Rahim’s declining income from his Gulf job, the family maintained a lavish lifestyle, accumulating a debt of approximately ₹65 lakh, including interest.
Rahim’s business struggles began in 2022, leading to a sharp drop in his income and halted remittances. However, the family continued to cover daily expenses, hospital bills, and Affan’s younger brother’s education by borrowing from relatives and financial institutions. Rahim claimed he was unaware of the full extent of the debt, estimating liabilities of ₹15 lakh abroad and ₹12 lakh in Kerala.
Affan, who is currently under treatment at the Medical College Hospital after a suicide attempt, has been arrested for the murders of his younger brother, girlfriend Farsana, and grandmother. He also attacked his mother during the incident. Police have recorded his second arrest and plan to conduct detailed questioning once he is transferred to jail.
Investigators are working to determine if there were additional motives behind the murders. Affan’s relatives and financial institution representatives have provided statements, confirming the family’s severe financial strain. The case highlights the tragic consequences of unchecked debt and financial mismanagement.
