The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala on Wednesday, prompting a yellow alert in Malappuram and Wayanad. These districts are expected to receive isolated heavy showers, with rainfall amounts ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Additionally, light rain is likely in Idukki and Ernakulam, though no alerts have been issued for these areas.
Thunderstorm Warning Issued
The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms accompanying the heavy rain in Kerala. The yellow alert in Malappuram and Wayanad signifies the possibility of intense showers and stormy weather conditions, requiring residents to remain cautious.
Fishing Ban and Strong Wind Advisory
Due to rough sea conditions, fishing has been prohibited along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast on March 12, 2025. The IMD has predicted strong winds of 35 to 45 km/h, with occasional gusts reaching up to 55 km/h along the southern Kerala coast and Lakshadweep region. Similarly, the southern Tamil Nadu coast, Kanyakumari, Gulf of Mannar, and Maldives will also experience strong winds, which could lead to dangerous maritime conditions.

While parts of Kerala brace for heavy rain, the state is also experiencing an increase in temperature by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. The heatwave warning remains in effect across multiple districts, with maximum temperatures expected to soar as follows:
- Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod – Up to 38°C
- Malappuram, Ernakulam – Up to 37°C
- Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha – Up to 35°C
- Wayanad, Kollam – Up to 34°C
- Thiruvananthapuram – Up to 33°C
- Idukki – Up to 32°C

Authorities urge residents in yellow alert areas to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid venturing near water bodies. Fishermen are strictly advised not to venture into the sea until conditions improve. Additionally, people are advised to stay hydrated and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses as temperatures continue to rise.
