Kerala is expected to experience intense rainfall and thunderstorms today, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert in four districts: Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad. These areas may witness isolated heavy rain accompanied by thunder and gusty winds. The surge in rainfall is attributed to a cyclonic circulation currently affecting south Tamil Nadu and the south Andaman Sea. Additionally, moisture-laden winds from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are contributing to the weather activity. Coastal regions, particularly near Kanyakumari, may also encounter a rare black sea phenomenon, with turbulent waters expected from morning to night.
The IMD has extended weather warnings into Sunday, with yellow alerts issued for two districts as more isolated heavy downpours are forecasted. As per meteorological standards, heavy rain is defined as precipitation measuring between 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. The cyclonic system currently affecting southern parts of India, combined with converging wind patterns from the surrounding seas, is driving the heavy rainfall predicted across Kerala from April 4 to 6.
In light of the weather developments, residents are advised to exercise extreme caution. The public is urged to move indoors at the first sign of a thunderstorm and avoid open areas. During strong winds, keeping windows and doors shut is essential, and contact with walls or floors should be minimized. All electrical appliances should be unplugged to prevent potential hazards. Telephones should be avoided during lightning activity, although mobile phone use is considered safe. It is especially important to avoid standing under trees or parking vehicles beneath them, as these could become dangerous during stormy conditions.
