Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala witnessed an unprecedented surge in liquor sales during the Onam season this year, with alcohol purchases crossing a record Rs 818.21 crore. The sales, recorded between September 6 and 17, reflect a significant rise compared to last year’s Onam season, which saw Rs 809.25 crore in liquor sales. Despite a marginal decline in the nine days leading up to Uthradam — with Rs 701 crore worth of alcohol sold compared to Rs 715 crore the previous year — the overall sales figures surged in the final days of the festival.
The highlight of this year’s Onam liquor sales was the impressive Rs 124 crore worth of alcohol sold on Uthradam alone, which exceeded the Rs 120 crore recorded during the same day last year. Bevco outlets, which are Kerala’s government-run liquor stores, remained closed on Thiruvonam day, yet sales saw a spike in the days following the festival. This post-festival surge played a key role in surpassing last year’s total sales.
Onam, one of Kerala’s most celebrated festivals, often sees a significant increase in alcohol consumption. The record-breaking figures this year highlight the growing demand for liquor during festive seasons, and the resilience of sales despite the temporary closure of outlets.
