The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for nine districts in Kerala—Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod—on Thursday. A yellow alert signifies heavy rainfall expected to range from 64.5 to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
In response to the weather warnings, district authorities have declared a holiday for all schools in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta. Schools in Kanjirappally and Meenachil taluks of Kottayam will also be closed on Thursday.
The IMD forecasts heavy rain and thundershowers across Kerala and Lakshadweep through August 6. The North Kerala coast is expected to experience squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35 to 45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to these adverse conditions.
On August 2, the yellow alert specifically includes Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
