
A tragic lightning strike claimed the life of a woman in Kalamassery, Kochi, on Friday amid unstable weather conditions in Kerala. The victim, identified as Laila (55) from Karippasserymukal, was returning home with her family after a wedding function when she was struck. Despite being rushed to a hospital, she could not be saved. Her husband, Abbas, also sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a medical college.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a spell of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) across Kerala from May 16 to 20, with similar weather expected in Lakshadweep from May 18 to 20. In light of the adverse weather, the IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts across various districts in the state.

According to the IMD, a yellow alert indicates heavy rainfall between 6–11 cm, while an orange alert signals very heavy rainfall ranging from 11–20 cm within 24 hours. Additionally, squally winds reaching speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, are expected along Kerala’s coast until May 20. Fishermen are strictly advised not to venture into the sea between May 18 and 20 due to dangerous sea conditions.
Authorities have urged residents to stay vigilant during thunderstorms, follow safety protocols, and monitor updates from the local administration.
