Kochi: Kerala is experiencing a significant shift in its automotive landscape as electric vehicle (EV) registrations approach the 2-lakh milestone. Presently, there are 1,83,686 registered EVs in the state, with 54,703 new registrations recorded this year alone—a clear indication of Kerala’s growing preference for sustainable transportation options.
The past few years have witnessed rapid growth in the EV sector across the state. In 2023, a total of 75,802 electric vehicles were registered, which marked a substantial increase from 2022’s 39,623 registrations. The trend becomes even more notable when compared to 2020, when only 1,368 EVs were registered, showing that the number of EVs has surged over 40-fold within just a few years. This steep rise in EV adoption across categories—cars, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers—indicates a strong preference for environmentally friendly transport among residents. Industry analysts predict that Kerala’s EV registrations will surpass 2 lakh by the end of this year.
Multiple factors are fueling this growth, including the expansion of EV charging infrastructure and government incentives aimed at reducing the cost of electric vehicles for consumers.
To meet the increasing demand, automakers are expanding their EV portfolios in India. Hyundai, a South Korean automaker, has ambitious plans to launch four new EV models in the country by 2025, beginning with the highly anticipated Creta EV. Indian automotive giant Mahindra will also make strides in the EV market, with the launch of the XUV e8 this year and the XUV e9 slated for release in April 2025. In the two-wheeler sector, TVS is preparing to roll out additional electric models, further enhancing the options available to consumers in Kerala’s EV market.
