The Periya double murder in Kasaragod, Kerala, remains one of the most contentious cases in the state’s political history. Five years after the tragic event, the verdict was finally delivered following nearly two years of trial proceedings.
The case revolved around allegations that CPM leaders orchestrated the murders of Sharathlal and Kripesh due to political rivalries. Initially investigated by the local police at Bekal Police Station, the case was later handed over to the Crime Branch, which named 14 individuals as accused.
Seeking a more impartial investigation, the victims’ parents petitioned the Kerala High Court for a CBI probe. Despite opposition from the Kerala government, which escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, the judiciary consistently ruled in favor of the CBI investigation. On December 10, 2020, the case was officially transferred to the CBI, which later identified an additional 10 accused, bringing the total to 24.
The trial unfolded under the jurisdiction of the CBI Court, with Special Judge Seshadrinathan delivering the final verdict. The prosecution, led by Public Prosecutor V. Bobby Joseph, examined 154 witnesses and presented substantial evidence, including 495 documents and 85 exhibits. Defense lawyers C.K. Sreedharan and Nicholas Joseph represented the accused.
The case not only highlighted the interplay of politics and judiciary in Kerala but also underscored the resilience of the victims’ families in their pursuit of justice.
