Heavy rains continue to batter Kerala, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert in 11 districts including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. In response to the severe weather, educational institutions in these districts — except Palakkad — have declared a holiday. Additionally, all exams scheduled today under Kannur University have been postponed.
The relentless downpour has already caused disruptions across the state. In Idukki, overnight rains triggered landslides at multiple locations, affecting vehicular movement. Traffic at Ranikall in Nerimangalam, which had been blocked due to a fallen tree, has now been partially restored. In Thrissur, train services on the Thrissur-Guruvayur route were halted briefly after a tree fell onto the railway track near Amala.
In Malappuram’s Karulai region, a potentially tragic incident was narrowly avoided after a tree collapsed onto a house in Pulancherry around midnight. Fortunately, a hailstorm helped reduce the impact, sparing the residents from serious harm. The fire force quickly responded and cleared the debris.
The Central Meteorological Department has also warned of strong winds reaching speeds up to 60 kmph in Kollam, Alappuzha, and Kasaragod. Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has issued an advisory urging people to stay away from damaged power lines due to the risk of electrocution. Citizens are urged to report any electrical hazards to the nearest KSEB section office or the emergency helpline at 9496010101.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant as isolated heavy rainfall is expected to continue in several districts over the next few hours.
